Prof. Dr. Chanam Manglem Singh Honored for Service to Health Sciences and Indigenous Communities

Prof. Dr. Chanam Manglem Singh, Former Head of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at RIMS, Government of India, and currently Managing Director of Imphal Hospital and Research Center, has been recognized for his exceptional contributions to health sciences. His most notable efforts include his long-standing service and healthcare outreach to the Tarao Tribe, one of India’s endangered indigenous communities.

Dr. Singh, in collaboration with eminent linguist Prof. Dr. Thokchom Chandramani Singh—renowned for his work in promoting and revitalizing endangered and lesser-known Indian languages—has undertaken critical community health initiatives. Prof. Dr. Chandramani recently gained international acclaim for being listed in the USA Book of World Records 2025, awarded by Dr. Ivan Gacina, European Union Head, Republic of Croatia, and International Chairman of India, Alok Kumar S. This recognition was for his groundbreaking work on the Aimol and Tarao languages, both classified as extinct according to the UNESCO Atlas of the World’s Languages in Danger (2009), and for authoring the first Preliminary Grammar of Thangal Naga.

On April 7, 2022, Dr. Singh officially adopted the Tarao Tribe by providing them with affordable and accessible healthcare services. The adoption ceremony was held in the conference hall of Imphal Hospital and Research Center on RIMS Road, attended by Prof. Madumangal, Dr. Thokchom Chandramani Singh, and various local and national media representatives.

In recognition of his humanitarian efforts and medical contributions, Dr. Singh was awarded the Champions – Healthcare Heroes Award under the Nelson Mandela Inspired Awards 2025. The honor was presented on National Doctors’ Day, July 1, 2025, by Famous People India World—an ISO-certified, MSME-registered body under the Government of India. The award, conducted in hybrid mode, was founded by Rajesh Panda. Dr. Singh’s official certificate number for the NMIA Award is FPIW/NMIA/2025_166, dated 01/07/2025 and signed by the founder himself.

Beyond his role as an obstetrician and gynaecologist, Dr. Chanam Manglem Singh is widely respected for his interdisciplinary interests and cultural advocacy. He is known for his work in promoting traditional Pumi culture and introducing natural farming techniques in Manipur. His pioneering efforts include introducing asparagus cultivation—a high-value, exotic plant previously unknown to most Manipuri farmers—and promoting arrowhead farming as a sustainable agricultural practice.

Dr. Singh is married to Prof. Dr. RK Shanti Devi, the great-granddaughter of Maharaja Nara Singh of Manipur. They have one daughter, Dr. Ch. Sanita Devi, and reside at Khongman, Imphal East, Manipur.
